Hava NaBaby

OVERVIEW

Hava NaBaby is a non-profit organization based in Baltimore, Maryland, that provides childbirth education classes and workshops to expectant parents and training for birth professionals.

Founder Rabbi Miriam Cotzin Burg combines Jewish wisdom with childbirth education to create a community of expectant parents and birth professionals. Her mission is to empower families with the agency to author their birth stories,  build connections, and honor pregnancy and birth.

Hava NaBaby's previous brand and website did not serve Miriam’s goals for the organization. She wanted to trademark her logo, but it was created using stock art from Canva, and you can’t use free or pro content for a trademark logo design. Read more about the logo design process and case study.

Along with the branding, the website needed a complete overhaul. Miriam dreams of scaling HNB to offer classes and workshops nationwide, training a cadre of HNB-certified birth professionals, and growing a large Jewish community to serve pregnant people at this stage of life.

Our job was to build a website with a solid foundation to grow alongside Miriam’s offerings. We designed an intentional page navigation system to organize lots of content. HNB must speak to two distinct audiences: expectant parents and birth professionals.

She wanted to highlight her main differentiator—that HNB integrates Jewish with childbirth education—and make the website inclusive; anyone can participate, even if they are not Jewish.

We wrote the website writing (on and off page), including organizing services to effectively communicate what the classes/workshops/training offered, refreshing old content, adding reviews from past students, systematizing and creating an event calendar, formatting headings with proper structure, writing SEO page titles and descriptions, alt text for images and more.

Miriam wanted a sophisticated yet playful and friendly look and feel, which we achieved with the writing tone, logo design, type styles, color palette, photography, and iconography.

The font selection was highly intended, as both fonts needed to be available for free (Google Fonts) so she could continue making future branded content. The heading font needed to be modern and look good digitally but have a traditional personality and be available in Hebrew. We required the paragraph font to be easy to read, sans serif, and light-hearted because it would be used for online learning. Both fonts are pleasant, functional, and engaging.

The cheerful color palette of warm yellow, peach, cream, gray and deep, rich purple is a punchy color scheme that creates a visually inviting brand. The colors are high-contrast, which is necessary for readability and accessibility. The colors are fun, bold, and professional, fulfilling the website's design goals of portraying a trustworthy brand that stands out.

We highly encouraged Miriam to get brand photography taken for the website as this would be the best way to represent her teaching and her students visually and be the most authentic. We provided a brand photography guide with example shots. However, we sourced stock photography as placeholders to meet the website launch date on the Rosh Hashanah holiday (the New Year in Judaism). We’re hoping to swap in custom brand photography soon!

In addition to stock photos, we customized seedling and plant icon art inspired by HNB’s garden-style approach to Miriam’s teachings as HNB participants create, nurture, grow and sustain Jewish life.

The website is easy to navigate, and users can interact, find helpful information, register for classes, workshops, and training, and connect with Miriam. We connected the domain, set up multiple mailing lists, legal policies, Google Search Console, and Analytics, and prepped supplementary pages that will be built out in the future, such as a blog, resources, directory, and store.

In addition to the website, we created Google Form header art and a Google Slides template deck.
